Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme produced by the BBC, broadcast on BBC One.
The programme tells the adventures of the Doctor, a time-travelling humanoid alien who explores the universe in his TARDIS. Its exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired.
The Doctor often travels with companions and faces a variety of foes while working to save civilisations, help ordinary people and right wrongs. Thirteen actors have played the Doctor and currently Jodie Whittaker pilots the TARDIS. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show as regeneration, when the Doctor is fatally injured he is reborn into a new body.
The programme originally ran from 1963 to 1989. The programme was relaunched in 2005 by Russell T Davies who was showrunner and head writer for the first five years of its revival, produced in-house by BBC Wales in Cardiff. Steven Moffat took over show running duties in 2009 and oversaw production of the fifth to tenth series of the show. In 2017 Chris Chibnall became the latest show runner now overseeing the production of the eleventh season of the series. The series is a rating and critical sucess and celebrated it's 50th anniversary in 2013.
